The second part of this session can focus on ways in which White Privilege is evident in society in the United States. Participants can either view and discuss Tim Wise's DVD clip, White Like Me or participate in a White Privilege Walking Tour which includes reviewing and discussing Peggy McIntosh's seminal work on White privilege. Although leading this session is a vital part of work on race, privilege, and equity, leaders are not advised to introduce this session during their first year in a new school. Relationships with teachers should be established and support should be garnered first, a lesson, Christopher Horne, a principal in his first year in Goldsboro, North Carolina, learned when his faculty members complained to the local media and their school district because they were required to engage in reflective work based on Peggy McIntosh's article on White privilege (Fine, 2019).
The unsettling reality of racism and privilege in US society has birthed contemporary terms such as driving while Black (DWB), #Living while Black, and the recently dubbed terms, swimming while Black and moving while Black. A number of recent events that have made national news can be introduced to help illuminate the concept of privilege. In New York City, Darren Martin, a former Obama staffer, was moving into his apartment on the Upper West Side when he was approached by six NYC police officers who had responded to a call about an armed burglar. Martin was questioned about what he was doing; the officers went to his apartment to confirm with his roommate that he was in fact a resident in the building, then later than evening, two more NYC police officers returned to investigate a similar phone call complaint. There was no burglary or armed assailant in Martin's apartment building. The calls had apparently been made by neighbors who noticed Martin entering the building (Rosenberg, 2018).
In Indiana, a Black man, Shayne Holland was told to leave the swimming pool at his own apartment complex. An off-duty female Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer who is employed as a security guard questioned Shayne about where he lived and asked for his address before identifying herself. After contacting the apartment manager who verified that Shayne was, in fact a resident, the police officer still insisted that Shayne leave the pool area. The apartment manager explained to Shayne that he was required to leave the pool because he refused to answer the police officer's question (Mack, 2018). The question Shayne declined to answer was in response to the officer's question about the number of his apartment. When Shayne showed the officer his apartment key as further proof that he was a resident, the police officer snatched the keys out of his hands. Shayne's video recording of this exchange with the manager and police officer went viral and the manager was placed on leave pending further investigation of her insistence that he leave the pool area. Shayne added that no one else at the pool was approached or questioned.
